Subwoofer in 124

I recently put 2 10" subwoofers in the trunk of my W124, and the sound is not so good, almost muffled.
I have swapped my subs with others, so I know it is my trunk, not the equipment I am using.
I have been told it is the position of the gas tank in the 124, and a peice of steel sits betwen the rear seat and trunk, is there any way for me to get aorund this and allow bass into the cabin?
Someone suggessted cutting a hole in the rear deck to allow sound to come in, but I can't justify cutting a hole in my Merc.
Thanks for your help!

Pressure waves, filter.

You will need a air passageway from the subwoofer to the cabin equivalent to the area of the effective active woofer cone area. The bass is transferred through pressure waves. If you block this, with a non permeable material, the material will act as a filter.

If you want bass, do some cutting.

You could consult with a GOOD high end stereo shop and see what sort of custom solution, they could create for you.

What you are doing is equivalent to having a tiny air intake and tiny exhaust, but adding 17psi boost to a Normally asperated engine. It is just a waste of energy and dollars.

Thanks for your insight.

So basically what you're saying is, I either cut my beautiful, completely OEM Diesel, or I'm S.O.L.?

Aye Aye Aye . . .

remove the rear speakers and it'll help a lot.

Here's my old setup in my old '94 E320.

Yes, if you have rear speakers, where the cone is visible in the trunk, remove those speakers, they are filtering the bass.

So remove the rear speakers - and just leave a hole?
Should I cover them with a grill?
If I remove the speakers, will I have a 'tunnel' so to speak from the speakers to the trunk?

You don't have to port (tunnel) the speaker holes at all. You only remove the speakers, and leave the speaker covers/grills on.
