Is this true?

On a Mercedes with the optical system, is this true?

This sequencing is as follows, on start:

(1) All the components "wake up."

(2) The CD changer receives a "ring start" command from the head unit.

(3) The CD changer passes the ring start command and the message "changer is here" to the telephone.

(4) The telephone passes the ring start command and the message "changer is here" with its own "telephone is here" message to the voice activation module.

(5) The Voice Activation Module passes the ring start command and the messages "changer is here" and "telephone is here" along with its own "Voice Activation Module is here" message back to the head unit.

(6) When the head unit recognizes the valid return of the "ring start" command and the "I'm here" component messages, a synchronous data ring lock is established. A continuous red glow observed in any of the optical connector cavities is the easiest way to identify that a ring lock has been established.

I'm asking because, if that's true, then as long as a person is willing to forego an integrated phone and CD player there isn't any reason they shouldn't be able to use another head unit with the Bose amp system since the amp isn't fiber, is it?

Further, if I use an adapter from these guys:

I should be able to use my steering wheel controls with another Becker system (I'm looking at the Monza 7882).

Does this "sound" right? Or am I missing something obvious?

Thanks for your time,

Domestic Digital Bus (D2B)

I think it depends on the model and year of your Mercedes, what will work.

In the 2003 US C32, the input to the Bose amp is optical, the head unit speaker outputs are turned off.

I think the optical controls are used in around 1999 up, but the optical sound transfer from Head unit to Bose, on the W203 came along around 2002 or 2003.

So the specifics depend on the year & model.

The optical polling occurs on the ring and this is why the main controller of the optical link D2B needs to be programed to include the specific features for your car. There is also an electrical wakeup signal for each component on the ring. See the link below,

Then ' 507 HO D2B (ICC) 10-30-02'

I think the steering wheel controls, may be on the seperate CAN bus.
