Installing Alpine Head Unit in Compartment?

I became interested in installing a head unit such as the Alpine IVA-D300 in that compartment below the Radio and above the ashtray in the 1999 W210 E320.
Any resources/guidance out there for how to do it? I mean, does one have to gut out the compartment and install some type of cage to hold the new HU? Would a Standard DIN Unit just slide in if just the rear of the compartment were sliced of? How do you remove the pocket in the compartment anyway? Etc...
