About to Install Command . . . a couple of questions

Hello all,
I have a couple of questions about installing the comand unit. I am awaiting a few parts. Here are the instructions and parts I have been able to glean from various installs, etc. A friend of mind is helping with the install and I want to gather as much information to give him before we start. (WARNING - Do Not use these instructions, I am trying to get validation before my install)

Sorry for the long post, I'm try to be thorough

Vehicle Information:
2000 CLK 430 Cabriolet
CD Changer
Integrated Phone
Voice Integration

Parts List:
A) W 000 589 88 63 - Removal Tools Keys
B) A 008 545 55 26 - Contact Bushings
C) A 208 546 04 43 - Bracket to support Comand Unit
D) A 230 820 09 75 (replacing part A230 820 08 75) - GPS Antenna
E) A210 440 50 05 - Aux-in Connector
F) A203 540 09 09 98 (replacing part A203 540 09 09) - Wiring harness for C1 and C2 connectors.

Installation Procedures:
1. Uninstall the stock radio
a.Remove the DIN 2 Storage Box.
b.Using the removal tool keys (A) remove the radio from DIN 1.
c.Unplug and label each connector (Order C, A, B, D, F, D2B)
i. A – Power Connector
ii. B – Speaker Connector (if needed)
iii. C – Special Connector for CD power, CANBUS, etc.
iv. D2B – Fiber Optic Connector
v. D – Antenna
vi.F – Diverse Antenna Connection
(DO NOT Stretch or Kink Cables)

2.Remove the Glove Box
a.Using a stubby screwdriver remove the 2 screws on either side of the box.

3.Install the GPS Antenna
a.Using the glove box area position the GPS Antenna (D) as high up as possible under the dash. Not sure how to mount the antenna.
b.Bring the GPS Antenna down into the DIN 1 area

4.Install the Aux-in (see Attachment A)
a.Clip off the terminals from the wires near the end (the opposite side, away from the mini jack.
b.Install contact pins (B) on the four wires.
c.Locate hole on the left side near the rear of the glove box.
d.Punch out hole if necessary
e.Place the Aux-in (E) mini jack connector in the hole and secure.
f.Pull the wire to a position near DIN 1
g. Place the wires into the C2 Connector (K) as follows: The colors of the cables may be different

Yellow Wire – Right Signal – 04
Brown Wire – Right Ground – 05
Thin Gauge Black – Left Signal – 13
Thick Gauge Black – Left Ground – 14

Would it be better to solder the wires only instead of using the pins?

5.Make the C1 and C2 Connectors
a.Remove connectors from harness (F)
b.Remove and label the connections from the original C connector. Using the below chart connect as follows: The colors of the cables may be different.
C pin 1 --- goes to --- C2 pin 9 (brn/red CAN B high) (use twisted pair)
C pin 2 --- goes to --- C2 pin 8 (brn CAN B low) (use twisted pair)
C pin 4 --- goes to --- C2 pin 10 (blu/blk D2B wake-up)
C pin 5 --- goes to --- C1 pin 6 (red/blk CD changer +)
C pin 6 --- goes to --- C1 pin 5 (brn CD changer -)

Would it be better to solder the wires only instead of using the pins?

6.Install Mounting Bracket (C)
a.No clear cut instructions, should be obvious (I hope)

7.Install Various connectors and antenna
a.Plug-in the reverse order from step 1 – Order D2B, F, GPS Antenna, D, B, A, C1, C2

8.Basic Unit Test (all should work without before going to the dealership)
a.Radio
b.CD Changer
c.Phone
d.Steering Wheel Controls for each

9.Test GPS Unit
a.Insert Navigation CD into Comand Unit
b.Select Navigation
c.See what happens

10.Replace Glove Box

11.Place Comand Unit in Din 1 and 2 - Harness??

12.Take Car to dealership to have it programmed for Comand.

Questions
1. Is it necessary to remove the instrument panel to install the GPS Antenna?

2. How / where else could the antenna be installed?

3. How is the bracket installed. I have not actually seen the bracket and my dealer says it is on back order.

4. Is there a replacement for the bracket?

5. Have I missed something?

Thanks in advance for your help.

So you have a GPS antenna somewhere on your car that you are not going to use... OK. I am not sure where it is on your car... the trunk? The windshield? I forget.

D) A 230 820 09 75 (replacing part A230 820 08 75) - GPS Antenna
Have you received the GPS antenna yet, and the COMAND... have you tried plugging this antenna into the COMAND? I don't think it will work.

vi.F – Diverse Antenna Connection
I suspect you do not have a diversity antenna connector.

3.Install the GPS Antenna
a.Using the glove box area position the GPS Antenna (D) as high up as possible under the dash. Not sure how to mount the antenna.
The GPS antenna has double sided tape attached to it. Because of the airbag, I suggest placing it above the instrument cluster.

Would it be better to solder the wires only instead of using the pins?
You should get all the parts before asking questions. The pins are crimp, so you need a proper crimp tool. The pins crimped to the wires then fit into the connector housing. The connector housing then plugs into the COMAND.

11.Place Comand Unit in Din 1 and 2 - Harness??
You have two single DIN spaces, and one double DIN unit. Something has to change.

1. Is it necessary to remove the instrument panel to install the GPS Antenna?
Not if you install it on the passenger side, as per the previous instruction.

2. How / where else could the antenna be installed?
On the driver's side, above the instrument cluster, and incidentally, to do that you will need to remove the instrument cluster.

5. Have I missed something?
Yes, your navigation isn't going to work because it does not get the speed pulse signal. I suggest you do further homework, because installing of COMAND into a CLK has been covered quite a bit here in the forums. The search function may have problems here, so keep trying.
