I have a 2007 SL55 AMG. The COMMAND unit has some issues. The clock keeps losing the correct time. The biggest complaint is that the display can only be seen from directly on, and is not very useable in sunlight. From the driver's seat it's hardly readable anytime. Day/Night, & brightness adjustments don't help.
It looks as though the firmware has never been updated. My MB dealer strongly advised against updating the firmware as they said once in a while it doesn't work and you end up with a bricked unit. Would a firmware update help the display issues anyway?
1) Is there a replacement screen that has newer technology that is visible, even in sunlight? 2) Is there a service that I can send the unit to for an upgrade? 3) Is the clock losing it's settings a common issue?
I want to retain the COMMAND unit, but I'm looking into aftermarket options: Any suggestions? Thanks for your thoughts Ed!
It is possible that a firmware update may change the display brightness/contrast, but the viewing angle, brightness, and ultimate contrast ratio are fundamentally limited by the display panel itself. AFAIK, there is no replacement display option available.
As far as the clock goes, do you drive your car regularly? Is your system battery in good shape?
