Motorized antenna - E320

I have a 1999 E320 and would like to have an external antenna (aside from window winding) installed to boost sensitivity. Clearly the 'always up' version is unacceptable and looks ugly so I was wondering the best placement for a motorized unit. Anyone aware of logic and feasibility of such an installation? Thanks in advance.

(I have Audio 10 model but about to change to Becker Monza, Euro unit)

What's the antenna for? You don't really specify...

Anyhow, the US-spec MY1996 W210 had an external electric antenna mounted to the left rear quarter panel. This antenna was used solely for the cellular telephone.

The size and shape of this antenna is similar to the model fitted to the US-spec MY1996-1997 W202 C-class; I believe they're both Hirschmann. You can probably buy an antenna for the C-class, and the mounting parts for the W210, and fit it. It will look pretty much OEM. Then run the cables for radio and cellular phone to the left side of the trunk.

ack....i was distracted with the Olympic games on the tele, sorry. This would be for the AM/FM. I use the portable GPS which is used between the plane and auto. Portable cellular works well for me in the city. I didn't want to trust Car Toys installation with anywhere unless I had a better understanding on where factory installations might have had them. Guess a trip to the local dealer might be a good idea too, eh? So thanks for the tip of rear quarter fender. Having a non-motorized unit would have messed up the lines on the car, I opine so wanted to keep a lower profile application. Thanks again for the feedback.

Why?

Moving mechanic parts are prone to break down. I find that these retractable antennas usually break down after awhile stuck in the half-retracted position.

Do these external antennas really significantly improve the signal strength?

You're correct, the mechanical antennas break all the time. My antenna in my 190E (1987 with 190,000 miles) finally gave up the ghost for the first time and now needs a new mast ($40).

The external antennas really do have the capability to work better. In practice, do they? I don't know, it seems like it because they don't need an electronic booster to get decent performance (all the in-window ones have boosters that tend to break pretty often as well).
