Why won’t my 2013 c class read texts

I upgraded from a 2008 c class to a 2013 c class, I also changed from Nokia to I phone. My old car used to talk texts to me, brilliant whilst driving and able to reply by talking. My new(er) car does not appear to do this, am I doing something wrong? Can it be done?

The short answer is no. This was a feature of your Nokia phone and had nothing to do with the car. I had a Nokia Windows Phone several years ago and it had the same feature. When I received a text message it would announce it over the handsfree Bluetooth connection and then I could respond with voice commands, but this was all the phone's doing. The car had nothing to do with it. It just used the plain handsfree Bluetooth connection, the same one used for phone calls. The iPhone doesn't have this feature and it's not really relevant anymore as modern cars support the Bluetooth Message Access Profile, so you can read text messages on the car's display and the car can read them out loud, and there's Apple CarPlay for an even better integration of the phone functions. You can ask Siri to read your new text messages over the car's speakers, but it won't announce them automatically. You can say "Hey Siri, read new text messages".

FWIW, your generation COMAND system does support text messages via MAP, but you have to enable it on your iPhone. Make sure "Show Notifications" is enabled in the Bluetooth settings for your car.

I did all this and yes I can read the text message by scrolling through the menus on the car (not good while driving) but I cannot get the car to “read out loud” the message. Nothing in the cars handbooks talks about reading texts out!. Oh well, that’s progress I guess.

Yeah, I guess your system is too old for that. In my 2019 I have voice commands to read text messages and can dictate a new message, although I generally use Siri for that as it's more reliable. In newer cars you can press and hold the voice control button on the steering wheel to summon Siri over the car's speakers and microphone and then issue voice commands to the phone directly. So, I can say "Tell my wife I'm running late" and Siri sends a text message to my wife.

My 2016 will play an audible tone and display an envelope icon at the top of the COMAND screen when a text message is received. I have the "Messages" option saved as a favorite accessible from the "star" (asterisk) menu button, and when the text of a message is displayed on the COMAND screen there is also a "Read Aloud" option.
