New MB Phones

According to my dealer's parts guys, who made some inquiries with MBUSA, the new phones/cradles (at least the v600) are now supposed to arrive at dealers at the end of November. (This is for an 05 W211) The last time they asked it was the end of October, so its slipped at least another month. If anyone happens to get a v600 cradle installed, it would be real helpful if we could test a non MB v600 on it. The answer about whether you need MB specific phone seems to be yes, but if they are using UHI-type equipment, this is a proposition that should be tested. My service person at the dealer said they'd tried with a non MB phone and it worked for a while and then the Comand froze up. I can understand the phone not being recognized by the Comand, but seems to me the Comand freeze they experienced could have been unrelated to the handset. Anyone know any more? pls speak up. Thanks.

It appears that the electronics in the handset cradle have the last "say" as to whether a particular phone will work with the system. So I believe that the handset cradles supplied by MBUSA require that the phone by a Mercedes-supplied handset.

Now, will an UHI cradle work? Maybe, but I doubt it... otherwise the electronics used could have been more similar to the ECE versions.

Only one way to tell: try a UHI cradle. When you get the v600 cradles, I'd be willing to try it out on my 04 E320 wagon. For my 05 E500, I'm going to let the dealer install the MB system. Since I have a non MB v600 now, and will have another that is MB branded, there would be a side by side comparison. Of course, since the hardware in the v600 is the same, and since GSM phones have firmware that is fairly easily updated, it is also theoretically possible to take a non MB phone and "flash" it into an MB phone. But that would require the firmware file, and so far, nobody's been able to either get their hands on it, nor is there a way to copy it off another phone.

Well, there is a way to copy them off another phone, and if you'd like to supply a phone, I could get you the firmware file.

But, we're probably NEVER going to get V600 cradles for UHI. They have already been discontined due to problems; if or when a replacement comes out, it will probably have problems as well. If it supports a V620 or something, then that might be a reason.

I was planning on getting a 2005 system to try things out. This might be the easiest solution. I'm interested in what kind of connections and such exist in 2005 cars, and getting a kit seems easier than getting a car.

Ifin you want one of these new MB phones, either the MB V600 or the MB V710, then you should order one. There is a large backlog that will take some time to satisfy.
