Ripping CDs to MP3: Preserving Track Order
Hi all. I'm beginning a project to convert my 200+ CD collection to MP3 files which I'll burn to DVDs, and I've run into a problem: When I rip a CD to MP3 files, windows XP changes the track order to an alphanumeric "alphabetization", which ends up as the track order on the DVD I burn. This happens even if I tell XP to order the tracks (files) in order of last modification.
I know that adding a track number to the track title is a workaround for this, but I'd like to avoid doing this if I can, as the number will display on my car's audio display. Anyone have any creative ideas to avoid this problem? This reordering probably doesn't much matter if you're doing "songs", but isn't cool if you're doing classical music.
Thanks

Some MP3 players support an ".m3u" playlist file, which lists the tracks in the playing order. I don't know if the Merc players support this file, however.

Thanks to all who responded. I've decided to go with adding track numbers to the file names, which will preserve the track order if done right. "Done right" involves using two-digit track numbers not followed by a period, eg:
01 A Hard Days Night.mp3
Fortunately, my Nero 6 software can be programmed to do this during the ripping process, using track titles downloaded from the web. The down side is that the player displays the track numbers, so this is an easy but inelegant solution.
