Ipod to USB adapter

I have a 2007 CLK350 with an ipod connection cable in the glove compartment. The connection and playback works great with my Comand headunit, the downside is that it doesn't keep the ipod charged. I am thinking of using an adapter between the ipod cable and a female USB and use a USB memory stick loaded with music so charging would no longer be an issue. Has anyone tried this?

Thanks,
Derek

I tried the adapter but it didn't work, apparently it won't allow data or music transmittal. Next I am going to replace the ipod cable with an aux (mini plug) cable and use a USB/mini plug adapter.

Could never understand why pdf, jpg, and USB weren't good enough for all things Apple, but it's why I've never bought any Apple product. Just glad Jobs didn't make his version of incompatible electrons.

A 200 Sedan
Tried a few aftermarket options, wasn't impressed. Sticking with aux for now.

I'm still trying to find a way to connect a 3.5mm jack to my Comand headunit (2007 CLK 350) I currently have an ipod connection in the glove box, I've traced the cable from the ipod plug to an ipod adapter under the glove box, the ipod cable has an RJ type plug where it attaches to the ipod adapter. The other end of the adapter has a 16 pin socket where the cable attaches from the headunit (I assume). I had bought a 3.5mm jack cable with a four pin connector which I assumed would connect under the door sill or kick panel but I didn't see a connection there. Any thoughts how I can replace the ipod plug with a 3.5mm jack?

After trying a lot of other ways to improve my music storage I decided to buy an old iPhone 4 and connect it to the iPod plug, it basically gave me a large iPod with a longer lasting battery. My iPod Nano's battery was on its last legs. Yes it is basically a bigger iPod, but it only cost $20 on ebay vs paying $75 for a new iPod battery.
