As if you need another reason to get COMAND!
First, I want to let everyone know that I did go to Chicago and had Steve from BenzNL retrofit a Eurospec COMAND (as well as Bixenons/clear foglights, Wood/Leather Steering Wheel, and Aux input). I am just overjoyed at the work. Finally got to meet the great Steve and he was awesome. It's amazing the amount of experience he has with Mercedes (puts every technician at an MB dealer I've met to shame). Anyway, the work was professional, it does look like everything was from the showroom.
One pleasant thing I got from the Comand (besides the amazing ability for navigation) was the vast improvement in sound quality. I had the original head unit from the manufacturer and the Bose premium system (with Audiopilot etc). I too had the problems of my radio stations seeming to switch from stereo to mono repeatedly as well as not great reception. After switching to the COMAND, my FM stations sound as good as my CDs and both sound much better than the previous system. (although the Comand still only gives you controls for Bass and Treble like the former headunit (I still wish Mercedes gave us at least an 8 band equalizer to fine tune music), it gives us 3 settings for Ambient sound (I prefer the large room setting). The music is full in richness now, the bass is now much more pronounced and best of all I still have the OEM parts rather than aftermarket additions.
So if you love your music (and the added bonus of getting navigation, which trust me is fantastic (I relied on it solely to get me back from Chicago to my place in Cleveland and it did a better job than me getting there using mapquest) I HIGHLY RECOMMEND GETTING A COMAND UNIT! It's my favorite mod I've done so far.
Hope this helps those that were on the edge of deciding to get a COMAND or not. Thanks Steve and Wanda as well as Erwin in Chicago (the host garage). Well worth the 6 hr drive each way.
Greetingz,
BigSis
