Question UHI cradle location Q

A question to all UHI gurus. Is the armrest compartment the only location for the phone cradle? Did MB drop the other one - to the far side of the radio?

Another related question. Is there a provision for a privacy handset for the UHI system?

TIA.

You have to replace the floor of the center console to accept a UHI clip connector. There is NO privacy mode for UHI at the moment. Please see my pictures for the floor of the center console. http://homepage.mac.com/drsunilpatel/PhotoAlbum14.html

Sunil, you must be talking about the center console armrest compartment. The "old" phone system had an alternative location - at the center console, on the outside, to the right of the head unit (see attachment).

Nothing MB related (sorry)
No, Sunman means 'floor'... that definitely wasn't a typo.

It sure wasn't a typo, but the "floor" referred to the armrest compartment, right?

I couldn't read the original post in this thread, but if you have MOST-based UHI then the bluetooth headset works for privacy feature.

I am not sure if MB has a spot on the right of the radio for UHI or not. Most probably not though.

It would be nice, though, if they did: you can easily unclip and hide the cradle when not in use and still have the entire armrest box space for yourself. Plus, the phone's dial buttons would be readily available for those without Audio 30 or COMAND.

The clip would still be shown on the dash and it's not very pretty. Also, if you don't have audio10, or comand, in the usa, you should still have cassette player.

The clip will be there when there will be noone to look at it. If it looks ugly - even less chance that the car will be broken into. I parked in D.C. near the MCI Center once, and when I came back around 10pm, there were no other cars around, but both in front and behind my car there were piles of shattered glass. I sure felt lucky.
And I do have Audio 10.

Any updates for a 2003 W211 UHI for Motorola V600???

Was wondering if anyone has any updates for this. Last I heard they were not working well. I am hoping there is a fix and they are working. Scorchie, Sunman, anyone?????

The UHI system works prefectly as expected but the problem is that was designed around europe. Cingular, US's largest GSM carrier uses 850mhz band which is rare or not even seen in Europe. Although the phones are very similar to Europe, they don't all work with UHI. For example, Europe has a 6230 Nokia and we have a 6320b. The B version will not work in the UHI cradle at all. Sony Ericsson has a t630 for Europe and t637 for USA, but the t637 works perfectly in the Sony Ericsson cradle. Siemens has a s65 in Europe and a s66 in USA. This remains to be tested but we should have word soon on it. As for integrating UHI in a w211, it still remains to be seen. I don't have a 211 to play with and I believe there still is an issue with the CP High and CP Low system of the w211. As with all these neat gadgets, time will tell.

My UHI works perfectly with Euro COMAND on my 2003 W211, but I don't know (and nothing personal, but don't care) if the V600 ever works. You'd be better off waiting for the US-version of the V600/MHI kit to be available ("next month" it's been for 4-5 months, and is now promised for January). When those are available, we will have a kit to fit that to a 2003 car... but the same issue as UHI, which is that TeleAid MUST be deactivated. I think... it might not have to be, but I haven't tried that yet... but I really think it won't work.

Randy, If you have problems with the v600, I suggest the v620 replacement that was already released. Very litle to no bugs as of now. But who knows.... I am sure the MHI cradle will support the v620. Most places don't carry the v600 anymore.

I am happy with my V600

Don't get me wrong it took three replacements, but the lastest software version is excellent. I just want to be able to convert the V60 kit I have in my 03 W211 to a V600 working kit. I could care less about tele-aid. Has not been activated for a couple of years now. I am technical with a wrench and a crimper and working on the car does not scare me. I just want the finished product to work. If anyone has a current solution now please E-mail me or PM me. If not I guess I will wait for MBUSA to make a kit available to retro-fit.

Thanks,
Randy

Randy, In that case you have a couple of options to integrate the v600 in the benz.

1. To wait for the MHI kit from MBUSA to be released (hopefully Jan 2005)

2. Wait for the UHI version of the v600 cradle. Which I have no idea if it will be RE-RELEASED or not. It was pulled because it was too buggy with the v600. Then if it does come out, Totally gut the entire Teleaid system (or atleast disconnect it) and disable your Central Gateway, Instrument Cluster, and Airbag Module so TELEAID = NOT PRESENT. Then install a Euro UHI kit.

3. Swich phones to a different model like Sony Ericsson T637 and use the UHI kit after doing the above. There's not much hope for the v600 at the moment for UHI.

On the US-spec W211:

UHI definitely doesn't work with a 2003 model COMAND; it if gets upgraded, I am not sure if it will work.

I suspect MHI doesn't work with 2003-2004 COMANDs either.

The older V60 kit (with the coily cord handset) seems to have some bugs with the newer COMANDs (2005 and Euro). Not just the phonebook issues.

This is yet another thing that is getting extremely complicated extremely quickly with the different versions of COMAND out there.

Thanks guys, one more question and then I will stop. Can I change out my radio head to a newer model, realizing of course that I will lose tape deck. If this can be done, is it plug and play or in need of reprogramming through star diag.??? Mind you I do not have the Navigation Command unit now. I only have the short window cd/tape/am/fm player.

Thanks again,
Randy

You can change your unit out to a COMAND and it is pretty much plug and play, but it should be reprogrammed using the Star Diagnosis. You should also update the software in your audio gateway to help compatibility (also requires Star Diagnosis). Going to a 2005 model should increase your compatibility with MHI and UHI phone systems, and has the added benefit of supporting MP3 on the internal disc drive.

At that point, you may as well add navigation...
