Missing Fader Control

Problem: There is no sound from the rear speakers. Well-known issue. 2013-2016 front-to-rear fader can be enabled using the "engineering" menu. This was disabled for the "facelift" models 2017-2020.
Someone posted on the r231 forum, "...unless a dealer shop can put it back in using the scan tool."
Question: Is this possible, or was the person just speculating? I need someone to answer who has very detailed knowledge of MB scan/diagnostics. Yes, I could just go over to my local dealer and ask. But the problem there is familiar to many of you: My local dealer has demonstrated time and again they have spotty knowledge at best of their own diag. tools.
(Many people have discussed adding an amplifier. Not planning to do this.)
If anyone knows any helpful info, please comment, and thanks! (Also, if there is a better forum for this, plz suggest. I'll put it in SL-r231 as well.)
