Nokia 6310i ?
I just imported a new Gwagen convertible from Germany to the US and it has a nokia 6310i phone installed. Will I be able to get this phone activated in the US or am I out of luck? It says on the box it is GSM but I am not sure what carrier to even try. The car will be getting converted for a while anyway so no hurry but just wondering if anyone knew this info.
Thanks,
Jeff

The phone is a Triband GSM phone. It will work on most GSM carriers. Pop the battery off adn there is a spot for a SIM card. Plug the SIM Card you get from your carrier into this spot. Cingular, T-Mo or Att. Tmo and ATT use the 1900 band that the 6310i use. Most of Cingular is 850mhz but you should be able to roam for free on T-mo and att now that they merged.

The phone I use now is a cingular v551. Can I take out the sim card and try it in the new phone or will this mess something up? I am a rookie when it comes to cell phone stuff! Is it the sim card that is actually activated and you can move it to any phone or is there still something else in the phone that needs activated?

Used a 6310i phone for more than a year and I replaced it last month with two new 6230 phones. After using the 6230 for a month, I can say that the 6310i phone is actually better in some aspects. For one thing, it gets a signal in many places where the 6230 does not get a signal (I am using the same provider T-mobile.)
Your 6310i phone will work here in the US with your car.

If you live in area where Cingular uses 850 GSM band, then you'd have no service. The 6310i is 900/1800/1900 GSM bands. For Cingular's network, best to use a phone with 850 band. Unless ATTW uses 1900 there, then you'd be able to roam free with ATTW's towers.
Oh yes, the Nokia 6310i is the true workhorse of the Nokia's line. The battery life is amazing and so is its RF. It's nothing fancy but a great phone.
