I've recently purchased a 2006 Mercedes B200 and it has these stickers attached to the front of the rear wheel flares that seem to be reflective and appear to serve some protective function, however over the years have become scratched and dirty and are unsightly.

I was wondering what the actual purpose is that they serve and whether I can/should remove them or renew/replace them.
