B200 turbo w246 overheating

Hi Everyone. I have a 2012 B200 petrol turbo 40k which has recently developed a overheating problem. Whilst out driving after about half an hour the car started to loose power and i noticed the temp gauge was up to 120. I stopped immediately and allowed it to cool down, called the recovery guys who came checked all the usual stuff, no leaks, not lost any coolant. He suggested the thermostat maybe stuck closed, so the vehicle was recovered.
I replaced the thermostat, which was a cow of a job, hidden under the inlet manifold on the back of the engine. The cooling system was bled by vacuum fill and then road tested. The temp went up to 90ish (thought this a little high) but car seemed to be ok for the next few days.
A few days ago my partner took the car out, vehicle ran ok but the temp gauge was fluctuating. So on her return I check the coolant level, this was ok.
I can start the vehicle from cold and it will now warm up gradually to 90ish, heater is cold and rad pipes are not hot, water does not seem to be circulating. If i take the car for a drive the temp will shoot up to 120.
Is there a special way to purge this cooling system?? thought vacuum filling should have done the trick.
I'm thinking its probably now the water pump, I remove the hose and looked at the impeller with a bore scope, this seem to be intact and turning ok. Do the water pumps cause a problem on these engines? only done 40K.
The Bosch electric heater pump has been changed.
Before I tackle the water pump, your thoughts and help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Problem was qured by replacing the water pump. This has a motorised valve which was faulty.
Cheers
