New Owner Question: C250 Coupe Doors Open Wide

I just picked up a C250 coupe. One thing I noticed is that the doors swing open without barely any resistance and they open really wide. Is that normal? I found that if I'm not careful, I could easily open the door and swing it open really fast and hit something... Seems like the hinges don't work properly compared to my other cars in the past. Can anyone confirm if this is normal?

The doors do swing open pretty wide, but they do on most coupes. They are VERY heavy and solid feeling. I wouldn't say there is an inordinate amount of resistance on the hinge, pretty much exactly as on my dad's E class They definitely do not feel light or cheap.

What do you mean the hinges don't work properly? As far as car parts go, these are pretty simple... they are either attached or they are not.

I think it's important for you to be satisfied with the feeling you get opening/closing the doors on your car. If you search these forums carefully, the general feedback on the doors is that they are heavy, close like a bank vault and sound like it too. I think you are probably not used to the doors opening so wide because your last car was (probably) not a coupe. But the resistance thing is probably in your head. It should be easy for you to go to the dealer and ask to see some other C classes so you can open/close the doors and decide if there is something wrong with your model or if you simply don't like the feel.

Similarly, if your last car was a sedan then you are not used to having such long passenger doors. Yeah, you will have to adjust to not swinging your door all of the way out when you're getting of your car in a parking garage. But the first "notch" in the hinge opens the door the perfect amount of space for me to get out without scratching my door on the car next to me.

After 2 years with this car, I have found most of those little ergonomic details to be well-attended to. The only thing bugging me about the doors/seats nowadays is the lack of an auto seatbelt restraint like the E coupe has.

Wish I could offer a remedy for ya, I do however feel it's a good idea to have your hinges looked at. I've had the complete opposite with my coupe, I found my doors to be a lot heavier then with my previous cars. I have also read in multiple magazines/forums that Mercedes doors are heavier then the average vehicle just from the road noise deadening alone. I'm no mechanic but with the widening along with the lack of resistance im willing to put my money on the hinge inside has broke, from what your explaining it would definitely fit the bill.

Thanks for the comments. I think I will go to the dealer and open another car to see how it goes.
