2003 Mercedes Benz C230 Kompressor
Question Premium gas vs regular gas

Hello All,

I bought an used Mercedes Benz C230 Kompressor, 2003 model about 2 years ago from a Benz mechanic. I was told to fill only premium gas in my car.

I've recently heard from my friends that for premium cars, even if you fill regular gas(which has lower octane rating), the cars can take care of the gas you filled. I however, don't want to get into trouble for filling wrong type of gas than recommended.

I have about 103k miles when I bought the car and now I have about 147k miles. Does it really matter if I fill regular gas vs recommended premium gas at this mileage? I don't mind filling any type of gas as long as it doesn't financially cost me on the engine. I am planning to have this car around for another 2 years now that it had not given me lot of trouble.

Kindly let me know your thoughts. Thanks.

I have put regular gas for the last 25 years, among them are w124, w140, w210, w203, w212 and a Range Rovers. Which they all recommanded premiere gas. I did not notice any performance or MPG.

Well OP here are my thoughts from owning a half dozen different brands of performance and luxury performance vehicles. Your car was designed and built to run on premium grade fuel to maximize both performance and longevity of the car. Will your car run on regular grade? Sure the ECU will compensate for the lower grade fuel. So the trade off from the performance perspective will be slightly less performance (vehicle responsiveness and perhaps also slightly lower MPG). Depending on how you drive and the specific car in question, how noticeable it will be will vary. Someone who simply commutes back and forth to work in typical city-style stop and go traffic likely won't notice any difference. On the other hand, if you like to enjoy a bit of open road fun from time to time, you would likely notice the somewhat reduced performance.

From the vehicle longevity perspective, the difference in most regular versus premium grade gasolines is not only additional octane boosters, but also some additional detergent blended into the premium grade fuel. So over time you may experience a bit more carbon build up, depending on which brand you use, by using regular versus premium. This may or may not of interest to you depending on how long you envision keeping the car or whether you opt to add additional fuel additives periodically to your car.

Anyway from my perspective, I would recommend you follow the recommendation of the Benz mechanic you bought the car from. Of course it's up to you. Hope this helps.

If you car is turbocharged then using regular gas will decrease performance. Your engine may also knock.
