C240 fuel pump

This is a C240 2005 year which makes it a W203 but I can not see a forum for that. Anyway car woud not start. Not one cylinder would fire once. Towed to Mercedes dealer 100 miles from home. We were camping at the time. Dealer said fuel pump dead - $1100 thanks. I rang a trusted Merc mechanic and he said $900. On Ebay plenty of vendors selling pumps for $45 to $150. What is the story there? Should I hire a truck and trailer and go get the car and install the pump myself at home?
Thanks
John

I had a similar problem with my 2007 CLK. $1,500 to replace the 2 fuel pumps at the dealer (2 months out of warranty, the jerks wouldn't even apply $185 diagnostic fee towards $1,500 repair.) I went to a solid independent mechanic who replaced the bad fuel pump, did an oil change, did transmission flush, and replaced the brake pads for $1,050.

If you were in LA I'd refer you to my mechanic.
