Does it REALLY have to come out?

The folks at Pelican Parts (a great resource for parts and a sponsor here) have a DIY tutorial on how to remove the Command Control Unit, which also calls for removal of the shift trim.

When watching the YouTube Video I noticed there is a little play/slack in the Command Control Knob, just enough to disassemble the unit. For anyone who has done this repair . . .
Is it possible to open up and replace the broken shaft without completely removing the Command Control Knob? I get nervous removing plastic trim parts with tabs that tend to break.

Here are some thoughts I would like to share with the group.
1) In order to repair the Command Control Knob you DO have to remove the shift knob AND the trim around it.
2) You do not have to completely remove the Command Controller Knob to complete the repair. However, there is NOT a lot of slack so be careful not to damage the cable.
3) With the unit still connected to the car you can completely disassemble it and make the repair as illustrated in the link in post number one.
4) When reassembling the unit I found it very difficult to try to attach the top lever to the plastic lever holders on the command unit with the lever holder installed; but if was very easy to first assemble it THEN install the lever/lever holder unit.
Other than that, the procedures to repair the unit are well documented in this forum.
Hope this helps someone.
