Ferrous metal savings in oil

Checking the oil level in my wife's C250 yesterday, I found shavings just pulling up the dipstick and they were attracted to a magnet. This is at the end of a service interval (oil is ready to be changed, but hasn't been yet). I'll change oil, cut open the filter and send Blackstone a sample this weekend expecting the worst, but I wondered if this is a common W204 failure mechanism? What all in this engine could make ferrous metal shavings? Crankshaft or camshaft failure?

Thanks, all.

After cleaning the filter element with gasoline and separating everything out with a magnet, this is what I found. Seems like a lot to me, but Mercedes has a long oil change interval, and I don't usually cut open automotive filters. Any thoughts? Thanks.
