W204 radiator fan on high + temp gauge low

1. Upon startup, the engine warning light came on.
2. Radiator fan went straight to high speed like a jet taking off.
3. Temperature gauge shows low, as if not working, however, will intermittently show normal temp after about 15 minutes of driving.
4. Eco mode not working when this happens.

Any ideas? Thanks.

Hard without an OBD diagnostic. There is a diag code to read in the computer… maybe a stuck thermostat? Look to me it’s a strategy to not let you use the car until it’s overhot… and overcooked.

Fan on high temp gauge not repsonding - mine now fixed

Mine did same . The temp sensor ( one of two ) near thermostat had failed. Easy to replace and several you tube vids on it BUT on mine the black plastic wiring connector fell apart so also had to buy the pigtail with the connector. MUST use silver solder when splicing it in or will get OBD code due to high resistance in wire . The other temp sensor in the black plastic thermostat housing is not replaceable - you have to buy the assembly . Fortunately the easier to replace sensor had failed so $25 repair instead of $150 repair doing it DIY. I bought an ArtiDiag 800 OBD tool for $400 which unlike cheap OBD tools will clear the many codes the car will throw over time .

Its the thermostat . . or the thermostat sensor. Either way, they both come in the housing as a total replacement, and isnt terribly difficult to change out.
