Need quick response: Liqui Moly 229.3 vs 229.5?
It's time for my service A on my 2017 C300 coupe, but I understand that I don't need to pay MB $350 for an oil/filter change. Normally, I'd DIY it, but getting a little long in the tooth and lazy, so I'm planning on having my local foreign car mechanic do it. But I have a problem with the oil he wants to use and would appreciate a quick reply to my question (have an apptment on Thursday morning):
He wants to use Liqui Moly Premium Synthetic 5w-40 (http://www.ebay.com/itm/5-Liter-Liqu...-/172750137817). The Liqui Moly and 5W-40 part is fine with me, but reading on the lower part of the label, one sees "...MB 229.3..." It is my understanding that the approved number should be "229.5." So before I let him change the oil, I want to make sure that MB won't be able to claim that I used the wrong oil when I return the lease in two years.

If your handbook states 229.5, politely inform your mechanic that that is the only spec of oil that will be used in your car and he needs to get that.

You might also want to consider another mechanic that you can trust to use the right oil without further direction.

A reasonable point. But, I've been using him for the last 15 years on two BMWs without any problems with his repairs (and some were big jobs.) He is a foreign car mechanic, quite honest and trust worthy...and i would hate to "loose" him. Just spoke with him this morning and he will get 5W-40 229.5 spec.
