Suspension Question.

Hi, I am a newb to the forums here so please be nice.

I own a 1996 C220 (W202) and I have a problem with the driver’s side front wheel.

When I back up and apply the brakes swiftly, the front left wheel jerks like its going to fall off. It only does it in reverse and I have no other signs of strange wear on the tires or shimming or anything. The only other factor is that the brake pads on that side wore much more then the other side when I recently did the brakes.

Anything you can do to help me would be great. I have recently decided to do all of my repairs myself as I have gotten ripped off by the dealer’s way to many times and this forum has helpped me be successful at it.

The last time I went to the dealer for a check engine light, they wanted $3000 for a Knock senor, Egr Value and wiring harness. I said hell no and wanted to sell the car. I found a local mechanic and asked him to use his computer to help me determine the codes so I could do the work myself. He charged me $85 and together, we found a disconnected house to the EGR. We connected it and I saved $3000. I hate those dealers. They are crooks and almost sell one of the best cars I have ever owned. I have recently found the computer he used and plan on buying one on ebay for myself for about $600 refurbished.

Sorry for the tangent but it helps when you vent.

Thanks and I look forward to anyone that can help me with my problem.

Thanks,

Steve E.

I had the same problem with my c280. It is the lower control arm bushings.

We have a NON-Official Mercedes dealer in Salt Lake. They charged me $400 to replace them. After looking at what they did I think they could be replaced fairly easily. A recent post on the c class forum talks about removing springs without a spring compressor. You need to use two jacks, one to lift the car and the other to support the control arm. Some replies suggest it can be done in 15 min per side. Good luck.

Here is the link for the instruction. I hope it works. If not is is under the tread titled H & R springs on the first page of threads posted within the last week.
