Mobil 1 0w40 or 15w50 motorsport

Whats the best to put in a '96 C180 142000miles?
The service book says Mobil 1 has been used since new.
Halfords are selling both Mobil 1 0w-40 and 15w-50 motorsport at £25 per can.
I tend to mostly do short journeys of around 8 miles and live in England, so often get a frost in the mornings.
The engine seems fine except for a very faint cam/tappet noise when cold.

Run the higher weight. Your engine is older and also MB runs hot. You are never suppose to run thin oil with any german car. BMW and MB usually take 20w50.
