C280 Test drive

Spent my Thxgiving checking out a 99 C280. Never owned a Benz but I got the bug after testing a nice C230. On the car in question I could barely get a breeze out of the panel vents. The LCD was showing max fan speed. Am I missing some switch or is this just busted. I couldn't get the panel vents selected without the defogger vents. Is that right? The car was a great drive and the V6 ran sweetly. Other than the fan and a strong odor which I couldn't place (maybe cleaning chems over cigar smoke?) it was in beautiful condition. Has about 77000 miles but I figure it should be good for many more.

Did you make sure all the vents were open? I've noticed a tendancy for only the side vents by the doors to blow when only the AUTO is running. You can adjust the vents to blow out of all of them by hitting that button with the picture of the arrows pointing at the seat several times until you feel air coming out of all vents.

I toggled some button that made an LCD image with an arrow up, forward, and down change with each push. I cycled it several times but never could get only the arrow pointing forward. I checked the manual cut off to the side of each vent and they appeared to be open. I could adjust the fan speed LCD to show fewer or more bars but no appreciable change in air volume or fan noise occured. Maybe it was stuck in low? I really like the car - maybe I could get a mechanic to look it over.

Thanks, MBP

Yeah I would go ahead and do that, have a mech. look it over ans see what's wrong with it. Overall I think you will be happy with the C 280, it's a good car. Do some thread searching through here and over at club202.com and you will find all the common problems with w202's. It's always a good idea to be informed about the common problems with a car BEFORE you take it to a mech.

The cabin intake air filter can clog badly depending on the conditions the car had been driven in. Many years ago, I couldn't get any flow from my vents despite the fan indicating full speed. The filter was filthy from me driving in dusty conditions. A change of filter was all it took.

The problem is the Blower Motor Regulator is bad. It's not a big deal I just did it.

Search my screen name (99c280sport) for previous posts and you'll see I asked the same question.

Cheapest place I could find was Importec.com $79.79
Also order the cabin filter cuz you're right there- might as well change it.
