I STF and am still unsure whether this will fit a 1997 C-class - not lowered.

17" x 8.5" front/rear
225/45 tires or 215/45 tires

Do you realy want to destroy a perfectly comfortable ride with those?

It should fit fine. You probably won't notice much of a ride quality difference with those.. Only slightly.

As far as the tire, I'd go with the 225/45. It will give your wheel more rubber to ride on (more protection too), and it will also make your speedometer more accurate.

Im on 8.5J 18" all around, with 35 offset and lowered AMG suspension and i have no problem AT ALL. The ride is also great, minor differences. you cant put more than 8.5J in stock fenders though. 8.5J is the limit when it comes to front w202 wheels. Any wider and you will touch the suspension. Cheers mate.
