I am not familiar with your OEM stereo. I think you need this Euro removal tool. I got this tool from Crutchfield when I bought my Alpine HU from them. You may want to try some local electronic/auto stores or check Crutchfield.com Once you have this tool, you just slide these two metal strips (they're like small nail files) into the slots at the bottom of the OEM HU. These metal strips sort of unlocks the HU then just pull it out easily.
Here's what I mean.

Hope this helps.

You need to go get the radio removal tools either from the dealer or crutchfield.com. You slide them into those two slits at the bottom of the head unit until they click and then pull it out. It's REALLY simple.

i am in the same boat... new HU but don't want to ruin any of the console.
crutchfield is a great shop with everything that i want for stereo replacement however they don't ship to australia, and i don't know of anywhere in australia quite like crutchfield.
are there any other aussies with the same problem and if so where did they buy their tools from and/or did they use an alternative?
also, i would love if someone had wiring details for the HU and also other details to the rest of the audio system in the car.. i have a '97 c200..

i was able to get the HU out with no dramas at all.. simply put a flathead screwdriver under the sides and carefully wedged out and the whole HU slid out...
the problem i have now is identifying a few of the wires, and in comparison to the replacement aftermarket HU there is one extra wire.
the OEM HU that was in is a Eurovox 7479A, googling this didn't get me anywhere in identifying the wires i can't work out myself..

just a small update on how i went with my DIY installation..
was able to find very a very good wiring diagram and www.the12volt.com (required membership to get to the wiring diagrams, but is free and is well worth it)..
also, to remove the stock HU you're meant to get some U shaped DIN tools to slide down the sides of the HU in the little holes, this unlocks the unit and you use the DIN tools to slide it out.
