temperture problem

I havent driven my 97 c280 for a few weeks and I started driving it a few days ago. Today I noticed that whenever I stopped the car at a red light, the temperture would increase from the normal operating temperture to the max of 120C. Then when I started moving again, the temperture would drop back to normal. Any ideas what the problem is?

Sounds like a faulty viscous fan coupling ,which is a fluid drive unit fitted between the engine fan and it's drive pulley, it allows the fan to idle until the air being drawn through the radiator reaches about 95c then it locks the fan to provide more cooling effect.

I agree with Shandy. You should repair it immediately. Until you do, if you have to use the car, fixate the engine fan to the pulley with duck tape or something alike (this is temporary and leads only to slightly increased fuel consumption). Overheating can lead to motor breakdown sooner than you might think.
