Wanting to replace stereo in speakers, please help if you can
hey guys,
i have a 97 c230 and i want to replace the the factory speakers. i went to a place and they told me that i have to replace the head unit if i want to replace the speakers, because Mercedes are pre-amped. He also noted that it will be very expensive to install new equipment. Is this true? I can't just replace the factory speakers with aftermarket speakers? If you have any expertise in this please help.

Replace the head unit first. And do it yourself, it ain't hard if you use blaupunkt. Both me and my son, 97 c280 and 94 c280, found the stock speakers and amp very satisfactory after replacing the head unit. Get a blaupunkt, line level converter, antenna adapter, and vw wiring harness adapter from crutchfield and put it in yourself for about 150.00 and an hour of your time.
Search for crutchfield on this W202 forum or the W202 forum at benzworld.org to see more info on my experiences.

Do you have the optional Bose system? That makes a big differenc on what you are going to have to do. If you don't have the Bose system, the swap is much less involved.

Definitely go with a Blaupunkt head unit!
There are a few problems you'll run into with after-market speakers.
1st) The door mounted speakers will require the creation of custom mounts.
2nd) The rear deck speakers are actually small subs. Mine were dry rotted; I unplugged them for now. I plan on putting two 12"s in the trunk. [Replacing the 6"s in the front doors, the 4"s in the rear doors, and unplugging the subs in the rear deck have left me with an inadequate amount of bass. So it's either replace the factory subs in the rear deck or go with aftermarket subs.]
My advice is find a Blaupunkt dealer who deals with Mercedes on a regular basis.
BTW... my Blaupunkt plugged directly into the factory harness, so at least that part isn't complicated.
