Just bought my first Merc =)

Hello everyone. I've wanted one of these cars for the longest time and am very happy with the new car. It's a 1996 C280.

Are there any local groups in the pacific northwest?

One other question I was hoping someone might be able to answer. I purchased the car last night, this morning I have a check engine light. The car however runs beautifully, absolutely no problems at all. The dealer says they will cover the cost to have it diagnosed on monday, but I'm out the two day lemon law if I do that.

Any thoughts as to what it could be? The car has 136K miles on it and was previously owned by a local business man that took excellent care of it (it still looks like it just came off the lot).

On the commute in this morning I did romp on the gas a few times, just to make sure the car didn't complain (I normally drive VERY laid back). It seemed to handle everything perfectly, but right as I was arriving at the office I noticed the check engine light.

On a side note I have to say that I am absolutely amazed at the performance of these vehicles, I love how smooth the ride is, how it is glued to the pavement in corners and a very comfortable, relaxed ride.

Thanks in advance guys, and I'm looking forward to becoming a part of this community -these cars are amazing.

Welcome!

Good luck on your new car.
You can try your local Autozone, and get them to check/diagnose your CEL(check engine light).
They do it for free to use their OBD scanner/reader. Then post your codes here or club202.com
Club202.com is a site made up of mostly W202s or same as our C class.

Usually a CEL makes the car go into limp mode. Maybe in your situation, it's just a loose gas cap. Check that and tighten if you have to.

Thanks! I'll definately check it out. I already registered on the other forum.

The gas cap wasn't completely tight, i was able to turn it maybe a half inch to an inch further -so hopefully that was it. I turned the car on and it still had a check engine, but I only had it on for maybe 10 seconds, and didn't drive it.

They can scan a merc at autozone?

Thanks again for the welcome, like I said I already love this car to death. Easily my favorite car I've ever had.

Welcome to the board, Forgiven! Like c280rookie said, Club202.com is a great site for the W202 especially because it's 99% dedicated to our C Class MB. I also like MBWorld because there's a lot of guys on here that are into horsepower and stuff. One of the moderators of Club202.com(Denlasoul) is from the Seattle area and a great go-to guy for pretty much everything that has to do with W202's.
Well, enjoy your car and hope you like it here!

Hope you get that problem fixed too.

Hmm, so guys, I fixed the problem. It was misfiring on cyl #5. Found out it was a bad plug and replaced it. Reset comp and code is gone.

However I noticed later today that whenever I give it more than 25% throttle I hear a little clunk noise and it isn't shifting correctly, sort of hanging.

Is this a bad transmission, or could it be that the transmission fluid needs to be replaced? It isn't throwing any codes, but I can't give it much throttle.

It isn't under warranty as it was a used car, however the dealer is concerned and seems to care. They are going to take a look at it on Tuesday -I'm just hoping I can figure out something between now and then.

For what it's worth I haven't put back both screws onto the intake manifold that goes over the motor, only one of them. I'm wondering if perhaps when I gas it, it MIGHT pop out of one of the two holes on the top of the block? I doubt it but it was a thought.

Any thoughts would be much appreciated!

Check out the owners club at http://www.mbca.org. There is a local chapter in the NW.
