Looking at 1999 and 2000 c280
Hi all,
I'm brand new to this board and I find it very useful. I appreciate the efforts that people put into it. I am beginning a search for a 1999 or 2000 c280.
Is there any particular problems with these years that I should be aware of?
Have people had any luck or experience buying a car like this on e-bay?
Can I get an extended warranty from MB if I buy from a non-MB source and should I get one if they do?
Any input from your experience will be greatly appreciated. I simply cannot afford to buy one of these cars and end up putting alot of money into it.
Thanks
Mike

I have had a 1999 MB C280 since new on 9/16/98 and have not had any problems at this point. Have 30,100 miles. The car is now out of the factory warranty. I did not purchase the optional extended waranty through the MB dealer - and I regret it - somewhat.
It is my understanding that an extended warranty can not be purchased after the first year - at least through a MB dealer.
I just received a notice from MBUSA regarding the results of a class action suit. Plaintiff sued MB involving the possibility of engine sludge. Plaintiff won the suit. The letter said that only the 1998 and 1999 models are involved in this case. It deals with the factory, in installing/using regular motor oil instead of a synthetic "oil" such as Mobil1.
My reading of the results of the suit is that MBUSA has extended the warranty (for sludge problems only) to 150,000 miles or ten years from the date of purchase (i.e. whennew) - whichever comes first. Without this newly extended warranty by MB, a sludge buildup would be devastating without a warranty to cover the expense.
Before you buy a 1998 or a 1999, you should check this out with a MB dealer. Good luck in your search for a MB - they are great cars.
