temp gauge-coolant sensor

Car has 145000 miles....

Last 6 months, temperature gauge goes on and off whenever it wants to. Last week it stayed dead. Car has been running for about 300 miles with "dead" temperature gauge. Car is not overheat (engine would have been dead by now) so it is not the thermostat problem. Coolant level and color normal...

should I just change the temperature sensor, and where is it located? I bought the temperature sensor 6 month ago (anticipating that this problem will come up). This sensor has 4 prongs which does not match with the (no. of prongs) similar sensor near the thermostat.

where should I check next....

thanks
