Spring Perch Failure

Well, today as my son was pulling out of his High School parking lot, BANG! He thought he blew a tire, but it was still inflated. Front right collapsed. He managed to get the car turned around and back in the lot. We went out in the road after I got home, and there was the whole spring and the rubber pad laying against the curb. I've read about this as an issue with W210 sedans, but very little on W202s. I'm going to start making calls tomorrow to figure out where to take it. Not sure if it's a job any body shop could handle, or if I should call the MB dealers around here and ask them for a recommendation. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I have seen a few posts in regard to this across the various 202 forums. I think it is more common to see postings on the UK forums where this has been more of an issue. You might want to search some of those for insights. I think the posts for people in NA have been in areas where there was lots of snow during the winters.

The stealership is going to be expensive. I would only go to one that has done a lot of these. If you got an experienced crew, that would help justify the painful price as long as they did a good job.

I don't think I'd go to a dealer for the service, but I know a couple SAs that may be able to recommend someone. Just wondering if it's something that any good body or suspension shop could handle. I'm also really glad that this happened at 10mph and not out on the interstate at 80.

Well, good news. The part, #2026260219, is only $17.50. I found a guy to do the job for around $200. He's done a few on W210s, and he did a left one on another 1999 W202 earlier this year. So, all in all, this won't be the end of the world. Also, I'm going to have him inspect the other one.
