1998 C280 wiper problem.

Ok here is the problem. Last week the wiper would get stuck on its way back and I hear grinding noise. stopped the car and helped it by hand and it went back to where it needed to be then tried it again and it stopped same place and its grinding again. I took it apart this am and do not see any loose nuts or anything. disconnected the linkage to the wiper and the motor seems to run fine when I hook it back up it gets stuck again. I am wondering if the motor has lost power to it all the gears look good and have plenty of grease on it. Any suggestions? Thanks
Troy

Make sure the shaft to which the wiper arm attaches is free of gunk. Our 99 C230 did this at the onset of this winter. I removed the wiper arm, moved the hub to about 45° to fully extend the rod, cleaned it with a rag and a bit of WD-40, then lubed it with a tiny bit of white lithium grease. Works like a charm now. Be careful not to get any of that stuff on the glass, obviously.

Did that and still the same problem could it be the motor for the wiper does not have enough power anymore?

no. the motor is fine. but it will where out the rubber grommet that helps the arm move. it's slipping and causing the arm to stick and jerk along. take off the cover to the wiper motor and grease the armshaft, screws and grommet with white lithium grease. do it soon, becaus prolong wear will kill that grommet and you will need a whole new motor which you don't need.

Take the actual cover off the motor? The round black cylinder that covers the motor itself?

turn you your key on, and then turn on the wiper and turn off the car so the wiper arm is in the straight up position against your window., now when you look at your wiper arm at the bottom, notice the piece that's moving up and down. take that one off last, and take off the big one at the base first. be careful because they are held on by ridges underneath and can break off so use a flat head screwdriver to pry them off. now that you can see everything, spray white lithium grease over all the moving parts from the shaft to the grommet to the base screws. carefully pop the covers back on, install the small first then the base because the base holds the top one down.

I wish I had pics to show you how easy it is, but I don't.

good luck.
