Wow, as a new W202 owner, this is kinda scary to read!! I just purchased a 98 C230 with 136k miles on it, and everything works perfect as far as I can tell, and the car is in like new condition. It has non of the problems you mentioned. The only thing that is a little annoying sometimes is a slight misfire at idle, but its very intermittent.
Thats how mine was for a long time. Mine was in almost perfect condition. It was extremly clean it was almost scary. Then one day everythig just started going bad. Right now in 2,400 miles it goes in for service B. Its been since like January since the last issue its fine for now thank God.
