Flexible Service, Synthetic oil and the settled Class action Lawsuit

My wife has a 1999 C 280. She received a letter from MBUSA explaining that MBUSA recently settled a class action lawsuit against MBUSA for not using synthetic oil in the earlier models which also uses flexible service system for oil change.

As part of the settlement, MBUSA is extending the warranty on the earlier model cars (I think before March 2001) which has Flexible Service from 50,000 miles to 150,000miles.

Has anyone received a letter like this? Does anyone know if the extended warranty covers only the engine or the entire car just like the original factory warranty?

Has anyone had problem with their engine and used this extended warranty to get his/her car serviced?

Shiit that would be great. Yeah does anyone know. I have a 2000 c280 and I have it in the shop today for the B maintenance service. My car has 40k miles on it, so if the warranty is extended to 150K that would be outstanding!!!!

Smile MBUSA Warranty

I also have a 1999 MB C280 and received the class action letter from MBUSA. My understanding of the letter is that the warranty is extendedfrom 50,000 miles to 150,000 miles or ten years from the date of purchase, whichever occurs first. It is also my understanding that this additional warranty applies to a PROBLEM WITH SLUDGE. And, no mention is made in the class action suit to the regular MB warranty other than the fact that the (sludge) warranty extends it as indicated above. My MB dealer maintenance supervisor agreed with my statement.

Finally, only the 1998 and 1999 cars are covered in the letter.
Thanks for your post. Good luck.

Now the question is if you have an engine problem, how can you determine whether it was due to "sludging"?

Exactly what parts are covered and what are not?

Sludge

The MB service folks will know if a sludge problem exists. They have ways of verfying this. There probably will have to be a certification of some kind. MBUSA probably has already established standards.
