Comand installed, pics and vids..
Oh, the vid clip is about 3.7mb (right click on the link and download it)..if anyone can help me compress it, that would be great...if you don't see any vid after downloading it, try using Quicktime..
Vid of Comand
yes...it is the third 202 comand I did...sorry for not having the time to finish that bottompiece of your woodtrim...
here is a picture of the first 202 comand I did: LINK HERE
How is your battery doing now?
Jack, this is not old skool, but the way to go
I myself prefer it over the install in scorchies car: LINK HERE greetingz,
in your profile it says your in the netherlends, but you just did an install for slkboy and he lives in NJ? do you make frequent trips to the us or something
I live in MD a few hour drive from NJ.just curious, does the mb command system have any monthly usage fee or charge? dont tell me gps navigation is free
I am guessing it replaces the trunk mounted cd changer as well?
I have an aftermarket Alpine CD changer in my trunk and its mounted on a bracket right under my trunk light. Kinda inconvienant when trying to fit something big back there, but it was the last owner who did it. I was going to try to get an oem changer sooner or later, but forget that now... command has it ALL!
And you say it works with a nokia phone too? I need more reading material on this! Which command system works with 98 W202. I remember there are some differences in wiring for my car inregards to fiberoptics or laser something, I really dont know.
Steve I agree with you and think it looks better where the A/C unit is above the command unit, as shown in your picture. Is there anyway to have the carbonfiber or wood trim look more solid? instead of that horizontal "cut" line in the pic:

Yes, you will need a fiberoptic changer. I have the old non-fiber alpine changer with adapter in the trunk, and I can't use it anymore. I have a mp3/dvd/tv tuner i was going to install in the glovebox, but I think I want to have a cd changer too.
Ok steve, I know i decided a bit late on that...unless that unit is still sitting in NJ..hehe..Pesonally, I kinda like Dean's setup, but space is pretty tight with the Comand, and I didn't want to trouble Steve too much...I know he was on a tight time-frame...Steve: next time plan more time to just hang out..

Steve did us a great favor by stopping by NJ on his tour this time, and did a great job installing the Comand in my car...i don't think i'd want anyone else doing it (including me..hehe). Talk to steve about the cost...
GPS service is free...you can get a gps unit for your laptop and it'll do pretty much the same thing...however, the unit itself isn't free.
All the unit is doing is triangulating your position...As for my c320, it's a lease, so i'm trying not to do TOO much to it (it's been lowered, rims, and has 2003 euro-spec bi-level xenon's on it)...i was VERY tempted to get Comand this time, but I think i'll wait a little more on that...the W202 is the project car for now..
More mods to come, so stay tuned...hehe...it's my daily driver, so that's why I decided to get Comand for it, since it's the car that I drive the most...

but I think I want to have a cd changer too.
greetingz,
i NEED the changer...sigh...it sux choosing between Nav and playing a CD...I'll email you the address...btw, FedEx sent me a nice letter this weekend..

and no...no comand for the 203...yet.........
Anyhow, I like the COMAND in the higher position (above the climate control) because:
1) it was harder to do? well, I think no matter where the COMAND is placed, the dash piece needs to be fabricated from scratch. To me, the seam from joining two pieces, or the gap from the smaller COMAND, both are not acceptable. Plus relocating the climate controls is also a challenge.
2) I actually LOOK at the COMAND while I am driving, and it's easier to see in the higher position. I already have a car with the COMAND in a really low position (G500) so I don't need to experience it again
3) I wanted the radio keys to still work for everything so I think that this solution is superior for that requirement, because the bottom fixation point is still firmly one piece with the dash inner piece.

Maybe if I have time in the future I'll relocate the Comand (seems like the hardest part, the wiring, is done)...or if you're ever in the NY/NJ area Dean, come by and help me out..hehe..for the climate control relocation, did you have to splice and extend the harness? that's the only concern that I had...
well, that and fabricating the center console, but i'll worry about that one step at a time.
