94 C280 Diag port, how to pull codes

My neighbor has 94 C280 with an intermittent throttle issue. Sometimes you press the gas and the engine doesnt rev. It has the engine light on, however I dont know how or if you can jump out the service port under the hood to flash codes, or if you have to have a scanner for it. The OBD-II port under the dash doesnt apparently use OBD-II protocol, I used both my pocket scanner and laptop to try and access it, and get no comm errors.

So, is there a way to pull codes, or is this a dealer kinda thing?

Thanks

94 has the OBD II port and many say they can read from it with a standard scanner. MBs can be picky about scanners. Sometimes I have try a couple of times with my scanner on a 99. 94 MBs have an early adoption of the OBD II since it was not mandatory until 95, so there can be some quirks. There is also a 38 pin diagnostics port in the engine compartment but you are going to need an interface and software that can read things. MB SDS is a given for success. Other software like Carsoft seems to be limited in functionality at best.
