Cool Starting issues

Hi,
I have a 2000 C230 K and it's been occasionally doing this weird thing when starting the car. As it's starting, it will start, but the rpms will drop and the car seems like it is going to stall. However, it never does stall. It will start up and run fine. This only seems to happen when the car is cold in the morning.

Today, I had one point where it didn't start on the first try. It did start fine on the second try though. I'm just pretty concerned because this car has always run fine except for some occasional problems. It has never left me stranded or anything though.

So what could be causing this problem? By the way, I pushed the car today a little bit and allowed it to come somewhat close to red-line. It has no issues at high rpms, except for the usual loudness. So I don't think my current issue is fuel pump related. Also, I reset the ECU recently and the engine air filter was just changed out a week ago.

Thanks!

My car had seemed fine for a while, but these starting issues recently returned. Well, I decided to start with something simple and replace the fuel filter. Turns out that this was the problem. Since changing the filter, the car runs smoother and starts every time.

Anyway, here are some pictures. I cut open the old filter with a hacksaw and saw how dirty it really was.

How long was that thing been there? I could tell it's pretty much been there for awhile since the rust on the bracket stained the filter.

A long time. The filter had a date of 2006 on it. So It probably went through at least 35K miles. I'll prob try to change it every 6K miles or so now. It's amazing how much of a difference there is between the new filter and the old one.

Yup, you could really tell the difference. I do mine once a year regardless of the mileage. Just to be sure.

yeah. I think I'm going to do it about once a year or every 10K miles (whichever comes first). But if I have starting problems again or anything that I think might be a fuel prob, that's going to be one of the first things I check now.
