1998 C280 sport - Engine Knock
Hello everyone. Good news, I just switched this week from a 95 BMW to a 98 280 w/sport. The car only has 115,000 kms. However I have noticed that there is knock in the engine at idle. I just tried a can of Tune-UP to see if it would clear the sound but it hasn't. The person I bought it from just did an oil change but, on the advise of his mechanic, put non-sythetic oil in the car. Arrggg.... Anyways could this be casuing the sounds? and if I did an oil change do you think it would stop? I have researched this problem and i realize it may be serious, but of course I am hoping minor. Thanks.

If you hear a knock it is more than likely serious.....but on the other hand maybe not!!! Maybe the guy you bought the car from used cheapo gas and it caused carbon build up on the pistons?? To see inside this cylinders you will need a bore A scope. It's like a camera on a thin wire that you poke in and look around.. Like giving the car a colonostipy(sp). 115 Kms really isn't a lot of miles so unless he beat the car like a "RED HEADED STEPCHILD" I would guess carbon build up.

If you wanna try a small DIY, hit up some seafoam and fuel injector cleaner. If it doesnt solve your problem, it's probably more serious than what i initially am thinking of.
