The check engine light doesn't come on because an oil change or a brake job is due. It comes on because it detects a fault in the emissions-control system of the engine. Your car could have a bad mass-airflow sensor, fuel level senders, or even a loose gas cap. Whatever it is, the dealer is the one that is going to have to erase the code, by hooking the computer up to your car.

On OBD-II cars can't you just buy a program to connect to the ECU to read the code? I know for my 94 C280 I have to use a special diagnostic tool/plug. I've seen programs that load onto Palmpilots that you can plug into an OBD-II ECU...wonder if it works for MBs.

If it's a 98 or newer it has a different diagnostics computer.
