limp mode

My 2000 C230 sport kompressor is stuck in limp mode.
Also the gear shifter is acting up. Whenever I shift into drive, I cannot shift back past nuetral into either reverse or park. I have to it turn off to shift into park, or sometimes I can do it by tapping the brakes. Could this be why my car is in limp mode?

I have been told that it is a problem with stop lamp switch from MB mechanic, another says it is the transmission control module and another say's it is the Shift control module. Any help would be great.

I would start with the stop lamp switch. It's the easiest (and cheapest) starting point. The switch is located behind the brake pedal. Took me about 20 minutes to change (and I'm slow).

The symptoms leading up to me replacing the switch was that I could not shift out of park without despressing the manual solonoid overide.
