M111.960 Engine Noise

Does anyone find that their 2.2L engine is pretty noisy?

I have a W124 E220C and the car is very silent besides the engine. There is little wind noise, there is very little tire noise, but the engine is pretty noisy. Even on the highway the only noise heard is the engine more or less.

Is this normal? Is it just a very noisy engine? Or do I have something wrong?

better isolate the problem first. try running the engine with hood open and try to determine where the noise is coming from. it will also help a lot if you can describe the noise it produces.

It's not a specific type of engine noise. I mean, it is just normal noise coming from the engine when revving. It's a little bit raspy, and not very smooth sounding, but I think this is normal.
When idling it sounds fine. When free revving as well. There is no tapping, knocking etc.

I suspect there is a exhaust hole, but it is barely audible at idle so I am not sure if it's a hole or not.
