changing AT Fluid on 1999 C280, how many quarts?

I posted my questions on the Tech section but if anyone of you guys can answer these questions for me, let me know.

https://mbworld.org/forums/showthrea...threadid=38774

Here are the questions again in case you don't want to click the link:

1) Does anyone know how many quarts of AT fluid I will need in order to change for my 1999 C280? The d(st)ealers suggested 8 quarts and so that is what I bought, but she didn't seem that convinced herself.

I will be doing a complete drain, including AT filter. I have access to a friend's shop w/ hydrolic lift so it'll be much easier than if I were to do it at home.

2) Also, I heard there's two drain plugs. Can any tech savy person tell me what those are?

3) There is no AT dip stick but I heard from the dealer that their tech has a special one which you can purchase. Any idea where I can get one?

Thanks,

timecop369

On my 1994 I had to drain the trannie, then drain the torque converter. To do this I removed the fan shroud and manually turned the engine via the crank bolt until it came around. It requires an allen wrench as well to unfasten the drain bolt. It turned slowly with one hand while keeping an eye out for the plug on the other.

The trannie you have is the electronic trannie which is MB fluid only I'm quite sure. I'd just call a dealer and ask to make sure. Also the dipstick is a tool that you can get from the dealer.

I hope this helps a bit, I hope they are similar.

Thanks SLC,

Yah, the dealer did say I had to drain the torque converter too. Looks like a little different on the '94 & '99 C280 transmissions, 722.424 & 722.606 respectively.

I guess it's another trip back to the d(st)ealers for that dipstick. Where do you insert that to meausure the AT fluid?

Thanks Again,

Yes mine is 722.4 which can take regular atf, where your's is electronic 722.6 which require mb fluid. I would confirm this with the stealership (hehe) but I'm pretty sure I'm correct. I thought there was the regular dipstick with a cap lock on it with these tranmissions. In that case you would have to buy a new cap as they are one time lock caps. I also thought with these you have to have it hooked up to a computer to get an accurate reading of fluid level at a certain temp. That would probably require an MB factor computer for that process.

SLCPUNK,

FYI, I asked the dealer this morning and there's a special tube w/ a red dot under the hood where I can use the special dealer dipstick in to measure the AT fluid level. $40 + tax for the dipstick! Thank god it's a one time purchase cause between that and 8 litre of AT fluid, I have no more money for the week to go clubbing! HAHAHAHA

Not sure about the one time cap but they didn't say anything about it.

Cool

I'm glad mine is the "old fashioned" kind. What a pain in the neck. Good luck with that.
