Normal?

When i start up the car in the morning and let the RPM needle drop, the car shifts rough. I know it holds the gear longer so that the Cat converter warms up more efficiently and quicker, but the shifting is like a jerk...but once the car is fully warmed up, say in like 10 minutes, the shifts are smooth once again...is this normal when first starting in the morning or after a long while?

hey, i got this same prob. from past experiance on 190's, replacing the tranny fluid makes it stop jerking at any time. i'm gonna try a full tranny flush on my 220 when i get some extra cash. think it's liek 70 bucks at mr transimision or something.
try the fluid flush. i'll post my results when i do it.

When i did the 120k major service, they replaced the ATF fluid and it did jerk before and after that, like its normal during cold starts...and i only have 128k now. Should it have to be replaced that quick? or is a full system flush needed?

prolly a full flush is needed cuz when u just change the fluid, it doesn't remove the gunk from the solenoids or other parts. so this will prolly work. prolly once the tranny is heated up, the fluid flows better to the solenoids and functions smoothly.

My 190 jerked like crazy until I took it in last week for its 120K service. They did a complete transmission service and now it is smooth again.

Ah, they only replaced the fluid and filter...no service of any type. By service, u mean flushing the system? or more involved in replacing parts, etc?

My cars been like that since my parents handed me the keys at 58K and I had the 60K service done recently and it still does exaclty what you described, GDawg. My parents inquired about that when they first go the car, and the dealer explained that it was normal. So who knows?

AT shift

Take this for what it is worth.

When I purchased a new 84 300D 19 years ago, it shifted with a jerk. I spoke to the MB mechanic, who I trusted. He told me that he could smooth out the jerking, but that it would make the transmission wear out quicker. To make it smooth, he would have to make adjustments that would allow play in the parts, like with a manual transmission when you slowly let up the clutch and wear out the clutch plate quicker.

I left it the way it was, and religiouly changed AT fluid and filter as per the service reccomendations. I now have 225,000+ miles on car and have not touched AT other than the fluid/filter changes.

Your milage may vary.

maybe it is normal on the older c-classes because of the mechanical tranny, instead of the electric ones. Its just jerking when it's on a cold start, like over night first thing in the morning...but after 10 mintues, it's smooth as silk.
