Change your cabin filter!!!

Look what I've been breathing. Maybe you should check yours. Those piles of dust are what came out. The filter media is supposed to be white.

Whoa Doug.... how many miles ago was your last cabin filter change? I did mine at 50K and it wasn't nearly as bad as yours! Then again... it could be the Auburn dusty roads. We only got SMOG here in CA!

Make sure you vacuum out the filter housing while it is out. Then, run the a/c on high for a while (5-10 minutes) before you get back on the road. I failed to do this and the first time I turned the filter on, I got a face and lungs full of dust, dirt, pollution, and other gunk that was dislodged from the replacement. I think I now have black lung disease! Ick!

Lucky thing the lungs have amazing self healing properties. You can speed things up by hacking up a few good lung cookies. Keep doing this until the black is gone!

It's quite easy to change. Under the passenger footwell there are 3 screws. Remove each of them and pull down that panel. Now you will see a panel that is about 7 inches by 2 inches. Slide the two white clips to the side. Don't pull on them. They are on a plastic track so they go back and forth. Pull down that panel and then pull out the filter.

Why is that a dumb question? I just cleaned it for now until my new one comes in. www.bimmerzone.com has it for about 23 dollars including shipping. It costs $32.50 at the dealer.

I believe the filter on one side ic black and the other side is white. Black side is the charcoal other side is the white filter paper.

Yeah, that's what I was hoping too. But it's white on both sides and the media is impregnated with charcoal particles.

You should change your cabin dust filter on the W202 cars every 10,000 miles or so. Why?

1. You are breathing the air that passes through that filter.

2. There is thought that clean air will also extend the life of your AC evaporator.

It is a simple job taking five minutes (I can do one in about 2 minutes now...) and the filter is not very expensive either.

does the dealership ever change those when doing scheduled maintainance? I don't think i've ever noticed a cabinfilter on the R.O.'s...

maybe i'll check in the morning to make sure.

The independent shop I go to for services obviously doesn't. I kind of assumed that they just went ahead and did everything but now I want to know what else they've missed. 10,000 miles? That's a little extreme. You don't even change your air intake filter that soon. Does it say that in the manual?

Dealer did mine at 30,000 as part of the service (A or B, I'm not sure). I don't remember if they've done it before. The only reason I know they changed it is because of all the pollution they left behind in the system. I'm still coughing up black lung cookies!

great...mine goes by the old service manual. No A or B service for me...lol.

If it hasn't been changed, then it's gonna be BLACK...128k and no change would be bad :p

i'll see tomorrow morning how bad it is...see if i get black lung, lol.
