Classic C180 Accleration

Hi All,

Hoping you can lend some insight into an issue I seem to be facing.

Purchased a 1997 C180 classic a few months ago and converted to MB's!

Starting to get a feel for the car and noticing some niggling problems. Apart from a CAN BUS issue im trying to get to the bottom of, I am getting a very odd acceleration issue. Im not sure if it is jsut how the car behaves or if it is something clogged/blocked or in need of replacing.

When I accelerate, in every gear apart from first (and at high speeds above 50 mph) the vehicle accelerates smoothly, then seems to stop accelerating, then resumes accelerating again. This happens at every pedal position, even kickdown. Whats wierd is that this doesnt happen when accelerating via the cruise control stick.

Im hoping that this is whats causing me to get 300 miles max out of a tank of petrol...

Any advice/insight would be massively appreciated.

Cheers all!

some people first try to unplug the sensor to make sure this is the problem, before replacing.

I had a same problem before… I pointed the worn out Throttle Position Sensor. It’s comparable to a broken or worn-out radio volume control that in a certain level it gets erratic, so as the TPS they have the same principles. When the TPS dial reach that certain point during the acceleration, when you reach that worn-out zone it either loses resistance or conductivity that doesn’t match the MAF sensor. But when you go beyond that point, everything goes back to normal. Sometimes you just need to spray it with electronic contact cleaner (never the carburetor cleaner) and / or calibrate the position to manufactures standards.
