Vacuum element leak - 96 C220

I am trying to fix a vacuum leak on the vacuum element for fresh/recirculated air flap that is located on the passenger side under the dash behind the glove box (1996 C220). The vacuum leak is only present when the element is set to recirculate air / fan off position (when the flap is closed), so for now I just make sure I do not use those two settings on climate control.

Does the dash need to be removed in order to replace the vacuum element or are there any other tricks to replace without the dash removal.

I attached a few pictures.
The vacuum element for fresh/recirculated air flap is item #44 on the diagram.

Hi, I need to change this exact part on my 94 c220. I removed the glovebox and am able to get both of my hands around the element (a bit tight but I can access it). However, I don't know how to remove this part. In the link above, the author is referring to one which has a clip on the top in the back, from the picture of the air recirculation element in attachment for my car, I don't think it is the same ( I don't see a clip on the back). Could someone who has performed this job assist me in how I can remove it? Such as which way to pull, how the metal rod comes loose (there seems to be a locking hole). I don't want to break anything trying to get it off because then I would have to remove the entire dash to fix whatever gets broken.

94mb7311, I was not able to replace it by only removing the glove box.
I did not attempt replacing it by removing the entire dash. Someone else on another forum said you can only replace it by removing the dash. If you figure out a way to replace it without replacing the dash, please share the detail on this forum.

Thanks for the reply. I am able to get both hands around it, so I think it can be done without taking off the dash. I would be interested in learning from someone who removed it with the dash off, exactly how the part is fastened in back.
