rattling noise from engine
my c200 (1999) with 169k on it has started to emit a severe rattling noise from the front of the engine towards the top just behind the plastic cover that covers the magnetic camshaft adjuster.
I think it may be the timing belt but I'm not sure. I did take out the timing belt tensioner and cleaned it up thoroughly and placed it back but to no avail.
the rattle is the loudest when the car is idling but seems to go away when it is revved.
Looking at the timing belt tensioner, I can't tell if it is worn or not functioning.
Is there an easy way to tell? eg when I took it out, the inside part (that you only insert to when it is flush with the outside part before reinserting into the engine), protruded about 7mm. When I placed the spring back into the housing, I heard this part jump forward which I would imagine it has to do to tension the timing belt.
Can the timing chain become worn or stretched after time and if so, is it a big job (and expensive) to replace?
Thanks,
Louis
With engine running, clock the steering wheel all the way left or right.
If the sound decreases or vanishes, it is more than likely the tensioner.
Part is cheap about 100USD. while you are at it replace the serp belt and idler pulley. DO NOT LET THIS PART FAIL! The belt and many parts will be messed up.
It can be a DIY follow instructions on line or on the forums.
Good luck
Isn't there meant to be a tensioner or something where the red arrow is?
And if so, why hasn't the belt come off?
Strange thing is, I've never been anywhere near that so it can only be:
1. The car didn't come with it in the first place?
2. The garage left it off during a service etc many moons ago?
